Tomorrow’s “MAM After Dark: Mr. Wright” will celebrate Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century. There will be great music, tours of the exhibition, and a twenty by twenty foot Lego pit, hosted by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). I can’t contain my excitement!

I’ll be in there in the Lego pit, building Frank Lloyd Wright inspired buildings, happily looking up like a two-year-old at the larger-than-life Robert Therrien table and chairs in Windhover Hall.

In my Lego-mania, I discovered online that I’m not alone. Notably, in the fall of 2005 the Liverpool Museum’s Walker Art Gallery had an exhibition by The Little Artists (John Cake and Darren Neave) who built their own miniature exhibition of modern and contemporary art made out of Lego bricks.

This occurred only after Lego realised that simply increasing the number of new product ideas wasn't enough. Having sparkling new toy lines is of little use if store buyers, or parents and children, aren't thrilled by what they see. Lego learned that boosting innovation is the easy part. What's much harder is to boost discipline at the same time, so you get not just bigger catalogues, but more profitable products.

Lego put this central insight into action by restructuring the company, setting up new processes, creating new management tools and appointing people to work in new job positions, sometimes in entirely new corporate departments. The unifying purpose behind all these moves was to focus and structure innovation, taking ideas that were "obviously Lego" and making them profitable. It also returned to Kristiansen's idea of a "system of play" -- it cut the number of pieces it made in half, keeping only those "universal" pieces that were used in many different sets (and so produced in much higher volume).

Since its near-insolvency in 2003, Legohas transformed itself into an innovation machine. The majority of its revenue still comes from refining classic Lego lines such as City and Star Wars, licensing more recent mega-hit
