He trained Elly Wamala
By Joseph Batte
No debates here. Elly Wamala is still a heartthrob crooner whose longevity in the fickle world of music is simply amazing. He has charmed thousands of fans since the golden 60s and is still a rocking experience in these roaring 2000s.
However, one man he will always be grateful to for keeping him in the spotlight this long, is his former primary school teacher called Livingstone Semyano, whom The New Vision discovered, is now leads a quite life in the rolling hills of Bunamwaya-Ngobe in Wakiso District.
The hunt for Semyano starts in the car-clogged New Taxi Park. I brave a bumptious ride through the potholes of Wankulukuku and Kitebi. Finally, with lungs choked with dust and the insides of the stomach badly shaken, the taxi deposits us in Bunamwaya trading centre.
Another short boda boda ride drops us in the quiet neighbourhood of Ngobe. “There,†says the boda boda cyclist.

Elly Wamala’s music teacher clocks 100
Music centenarian Making a career as a celebrity until an advanced age is no easy feat!
But then again, living beyond the age of 90 is not easy, either.
Livingstone Semyano, who is Elly Wamala’s teacher, has accomplished this, writes Joseph Batte
Elly Wamala will go down the music folklore as one of the finest musicians Uganda has ever produced.
He was a heartthrob crooner whose longevity in the fickle world of music was simply amazing.
After creating Uganda’s first popular genre of music called kadongo kamu with Nabutono in 1957-58, he went on to charm thousands of fans in the golden 1960s.
He was still a rocking experience in the roaring 2000s, earning himself the nickname, The Evergreen, from me, until he succumbed to cancer of the throat in 2003 at the age of 63.
The centenarian teacher
What the world does not know is that there was a pillar who played a big role in shaping Wamala’s music. That pillar is Livingstone Semyano.
Semyano was Wamala’s teacher at Mackay Memorial School in Nateete, Kampala.
That pillar, Semyano, is still alive and he clocked 100 years on January 9.
