Gordon Hope Grant was born in San Francisco and educated in Scotland. After Scotland Hope studied at the Heatherly and Lambeth Art School in London and returned to San Francisco where he worked as an illustrator for local newspapers until , when he moved to New York as an illustrator.

Later in life Grant lived on Rocky Neck, Gloucester, MA for 20 years. Here he focused on the harbor and its surroundings for much of his work. 

A member of numerous professional societies, his work is held in important collections nationwide, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Born in San Francisco, California on July 7, , Gordon Hope Grant is known for his etchings and paintings of marine subjects. At age 13, he was sent to Scotland for schooling, and the four-month sail around Cape Horn remained a permanent influence on his career. He studied art in Heatherly and Lambeth Art Schools in London, and then in , became a staff artist for the San Francisco "Examiner." The next year, he took the same type of job for the "New York World".  He also worked for "Puck" magazine for 8 years and did illustration for children's and adult books. For "Harper's Weekly", he served as a combat artist for both the Boer War and the Mexican Revolution.

His reputation as a marine painter became much stronger after when prints of his painting of the U.S. Constitution went on the market with popular reception, and the monies were used to preserve the old ship. Grant and others were successful lobbying Congress to designate the vessel a national monument, and Grant's painting of the U.S. Constitution is in the White House collection, where it has hung in the Oval Office.
