George Raymond Richard Martin[1] (born George Raymond Martin; September 20, 1948)[2] also known by the initials G.R.R.M.[3] is an American author, television writer, and television producer. He is best known as the author of the series of epic fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, which were adapted into the Primetime Emmy Award–winning television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and its prequel series House of the Dragon (2022–present). He also helped create the Wild Cards anthology series and contributed worldbuilding for the video game Elden Ring (2022).
In 2005, Lev Grossman of Time called Martin "the American Tolkien",[4][5][6] and in 2011, he was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.[7][8] He is a longtime resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he helped fund Meow Wolf and owns the Jean Cocteau Cinema.[9][10][11] The city commemorates March 29 as George R. R. Martin Day.[12]

Publisher Scholastic announced Thursday that Collins’ fifth book in the popular dystopian series, Sunrise on the Reaping, will be available on March 18, 2025. In addition, Lionsgate will produce a film adaptation of the new novel to reach movie theaters on November 20, 2026.
The new title is set 40 years after the events of the most recent book in the series, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and focuses on themes of misinformation and government influence. “I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,’” Collins said in a statement. “The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
