Cresciuto in una famiglia di artisti di vaudeville, da bambino ha iniziato a suonare il clarinetto, la batteria e a 13 anni il sassofono tenore. Già a 15 anni girava con orchestrine da ballo e, in questo periodo, gli è stato dato il nome di “Zoot”. Il primo ingaggio importante lo ha avuto con l’orchestra di Les Brown insieme al fratello Ray, poi ha suonato in quella di Kenny Baker, con Bob Astor, con Sonny Dunham, con Bobby Sherwood con il quale si è trasferito a New York, dove ha lavorato con Teddy Powell nel 1943 e poi con Benny Goodman nel 1944. Dopo la parentesi militare è entrato nella Jess Stacy Dixieland Band, ha inciso il suo primo disco con Bill Harris e poi con Joe Bushkin nel 1946, ha suonato con Gene Roland e da qui col gregge di Woody Herman nel 1947 diventando uno dei ”four brothers”. Nel 1949 è andato con Buddy Rich, poi con Artie Shaw nel 1950 e nel 1952 con Stan Kenton. In seguito ha scelto di lavorare freelance, ha collaborato con Gerry Mulligan, nella Birdland All Stars nel 1957, ha accompagnato Benny Goodman in Unione Sovietica, con Duke Ellington nel 1967, nella The Big New Band Of The Sixties di Ernie Wilkins, con Quincy Jones ed in molti piccoli gruppi di
