Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra ( ) was a Spanish writer most famous for his novel Don Quixote.[1] Cervantes traveled to Italy as a young man, serving as a chamberlain and a solder. In he was shot three times in a battle with the Turks on the Mediterranean. Three years later he attempted to return to Spain, but was captured by Barbary pirates and sold into slavery in Algiers.
